What is MTD for Income Tax?

Sole traders and landlords must keep digital records and send HMRC a quarterly update, plus a final declaration each year. It is phasing in by income:

  • 6 April 2026Income over £50,000
  • 6 April 2027Income over £30,000
  • 6 April 2028Income over £20,000

HMRC decides using the income on your tax return from two years before. This checker is a guide, not tax advice.
